Interview with Hannah Short from HanAhrt

Memorable Event Entertainment & Custom Flow Prop Artist

Featuring: Hannah Maree Short

Ōtepoti / Dunedin

Kia ora!

Meet Hannah Short, the heart (and paint-covered hands!) behind HanAhrt.

Based in beautiful Ōtepoti Dunedin, Hannah is a professional artist, face painter, balloon twister, performer, organizer/manager, and creative businesswoman who transforms ordinary events into colourful, joy-filled experiences.

Whether she’s painting a tiny superhero, twisting a balloon crown, making an event magical with fun characters, or setting up one of her signature HanAhrt stations- Hannah brings creativity, warmth, and calm confidence to every space she works in. With over 20 years as a visual artist and over 10 years of experience hosting and being involved with creative spaces at events and festivals- Hannah has grown HanAhrt into a beloved name among families, schools, and event organizers across Otago and beyond.

Having just recently joined up with Entertain the Children - NZ's premiere children's party entertainment directory and community - I asked Hannah some questions to get an insight into herself, her business, as well as what makes HanAhrt so special.

Tell us about HanAhrt, what makes you stand out in the Children's Party entertainment space?

HanAhrt is all about memorable moments. Our work stands out for three key reasons:

  1. Professional, high-quality artistry

Hannah uses only professional, skin-safe products and refined techniques so her designs stay bright and crisp all day long, even after hours of running, dancing, and play. Parents often comment on how her designs still look wonderful hours later (and sometimes the next day).

  2. A thoughtful, magical experience

Every HanAhrt setup feels welcoming and inclusive. Guests are greeted by a clean, inviting space, a comfy chair that suits everyone and an artist who listens carefully to what each person wants. The whole experience is calm, engaging, and filled with smiles.

  3. Flexible, professional service

Hannah offers everything from quick, high-volume festival setups to luxury pop-up experiences and themed party packages. She works brilliantly with crowds, shy kids and neurodiverse guests, always keeping excitement flowing while staying organised and professional.

What does HanAhrt specialize in?

HanAhrt a variety of party options, including;

Face Painting: I love bringing characters to life — from glittery princesses and roaring tigers to detailed designs for theatre, dance groups, and elegant adult looks. I also offer baby bump painting, and if you need something extra special, I can create custom stencils made just for your event or business.

Balloon Art:Whether it’s quick, fun line work or more intricate creations like hats, crowns, animals, and themed décor, I’ve got you covered. Both Ryan and I offer balloon twisting, so you can book balloons and face painting together for a seamless, fun-filled experience.

Versatile Setups:I can fit into just about any space—from small, cosy setups to big event stations. I also bring along the HanAhrt Pop-Up Kit: my mobile, drive-in creative space that feels lush, VIP, and super photogenic. I offer appointments from my makeup chair in a beautiful studio salon too, perfect for private sessions or pre-event glam for individuals or whole groups.

Roaming Performers & MC Services: My team and I love wandering through events, entertaining, blowing bubbles, hosting, and keeping everything running smoothly while spreading smiles wherever we go.

In addition to the above, we have Add-ons: You can add magical extras like my signature 30-minute in-costume encore, special balloon treats for guests of honour, or sponsorship/koha-friendly options for schools and community events.

How did your business name "HanAhrt" came about?

My business name, HanAhrt, is a blend of my nickname Han and art, but also heart because everything I create is truly art from the heart: thoughtful, passionate, playful, and professional.

Has art always been a passion?

Yes actually, I have always been an artist. And I have been into painting, drawing, sculpting and building since childhood. Later on event entertainment became the perfect way to combine my creativity with the joy of bringing art and fun to the community.

Fun fact: My first job was as a McDonald’s Birthday Party Hostess!

Do you have any other creative hobbies?

Yes actually -I also handcraft high-quality flow and fire props — things like poi, staffs, levitation wands, swords, fire fans and other creative pieces. Every item is custom-made by me (no factory duplicates!), designed with care, balance, and real craftsmanship. I can also create unique stage props and personalized, made-to-order designs for your performance or event.

What are some of your favourite/not so favourite parts of the job?

Favourite: Honestly, nothing beats that “mirror moment” — when a child sees their face and just lights up with the biggest grin.

Least favourite: Definitely packing up in Dunedin’s wind and rain! But hey, after years of doing this, I’ve learned how to be prepared for pretty much any weather!

What makes HanAhrt stand out from other entertainers, and why should parents choose HanAhrt?

If you want your next event to be magical, stress-free, and full of colour, I’d love to help make it unforgettable. What I offer isn’t just entertainment — it’s an artistic experience filled with care, creativity, and heart.

I’m organized, calm, and a bit of a creative problem-solver, which is why parents, schools, festivals, and event organizers often choose me when they want something beautiful, professional, and genuinely memorable.
